Dented: How to Repair a Dented Bumper

Posted on

If you have recently reversed into a lighting pole or other obstacle, you may have damaged the plastic bumper on your car. If you have the right tools, it may be possible to remove the dent from your plastic bumper yourself. Below is a guide to DIY bumper repair.

Prepared the Water

You will need a pan of boiling water, a pan of cold water and a plunger. Fill the two pans with water and bring one to the boil. While the other is coming to a boil, fill the other pan of water with tap water. You can add ice cubes to the cold water plan to further lower the temperature. Once the water is boiling, carefully take the pans outside and place them near the bumper of your car.

Apply Heat

You should pour the boiling water over the dented part of the bumper. The heat will cause the plastic to soften and become pliable.

Apply the Plunger

As soon as you have finished pouring the hot water over the dent, you should press the plunger over the heated area. When you pull the plunger away from the dent, it should pop back into shape.

Cool the Dent

When you are happy that the bumper is back in shape, you should pour the cold water over the location of the dent. The cool water will quickly cool the plastic, causing it to harden again so that it retains its proper shape.

Repair the Scratches

Now you have fixed the dent, you may notice scratches on the bumper caused by the collision. To fix these, you will need to visit your local auto shop to buy a polishing compound. When you return home, you should rinse the part of the bumper which has been scratched. Next, apply the polishing compound with a soft cloth, rubbing it directly into the scratched area using small circular motions so it forms an even surface. If you do not apply the compound evenly, this will be noticeable once the job is complete. Once you have allowed the compound to dry, your bumper should be as good as new.

If you are unable to remove the dent from your bumper or you are unable to repair any scratches, you should take your car to an auto repair shop and have it inspected by a qualified mechanic. They will be able to inspect your vehicle and carry out any necessary repairs.
