Is Your Vehicle's Differential Faulty?

Posted on

Although motorists do not typically spend time being concerned with their vehicle's differential a they would with the engine or the battery, it is still an important component. The differential functions to split the torque provided by the engine into two ways. This splitting of the torque is what enables your car's wheels to rotate at different speeds. The differential is typically not problematic. However, when it does start to malfunction, it is best to seek diff repairs before the problem escalates. Here are some of the signs that would indicate you are driving your vehicle with a faulty differential.

Your vehicle is emitting strange noises

One of the first signs that your differential may require repairs is weird noises coming from your vehicle. Typically, these noises will either be clinking or rattling sounds that come about as your car is moving. When you attempt to accelerate the vehicle, the sounds may change to loud squeaking. Some motorists make the mistake of ignoring these weird noises assuming that they will be addressed during their next car service. This is not advisable as continued use of your vehicle will exacerbate the problem with your differential and may even require you to replace it in its entirety. Any unusual noises emanating from your car should e checked out by a qualified mechanic to ensure they are not indicative of a serious underlying problem with your differential.

Your vehicle is experiencing intense vibrations

If you are driving your vehicle and begin to experience shaking or vibrations, then it could be indicative of a faulty differential. These vibrations could be particularly intense in the floorboards of your car. The vibrations may significantly intensify when you attempt to accelerate your car. In some cases, vehicles may begin to vibrate if they have a bad tyre. However, if all your tyres are in optimum condition, it would be best to have a mechanic inspect the vehicle and establish whether you require diff repairs.

Your vehicle is unable to navigate turns

If you are finding it increasingly challenging to maneuver your vehicle around corners and turns, then it is a sure fire sign that your differential is on the fritz. The main function of the differential is to ensure that the wheels of the vehicle rotate at different speeds to enable you navigate corners while maintaining full control of the vehicle. If the differential is faulty, you may start experiencing difficulties when trying to turn the car as the wheels will have some resistance. This can also impede on your ability to park in tight spots.
