Some Important Things to Remember About Buying a Caravan

Posted on

A caravan is a great investment for anyone, especially those with families. They offer an affordable way to travel and more convenience when on the road; you don't need to worry about hotel reservations when you have a caravan, as you're taking your "hotel room" with you wherever you go. When you're ready to shop for a caravan, you might note some very important factors to remember so you're sure to get the right choice for you and for your family.

Not every park will accept every caravan

Some caravan parks might not accept pop-up caravans, as they may allow too much noise to escape from the inside. They may also be seen as a bit cheap, and some parks may prefer to only host actual trailers and motor homes. On the other hand, some oversized caravans might not fit in every single park because of their length, and not every park has pull-through sites to accommodate them. Remember this when you're ready to choose a caravan; check your favorite parks or destination spots before shopping so you get the right size and type of caravan for those locations.

Loading your caravan can add significant weight

You may note a potential caravan and its weight and then compare it to the towing capacity of your vehicle but forget that loading the caravan can add significant weight. Sporting goods, a motorcycle, full fuel tanks, water tanks, and other items can all add quite a bit of weight to your caravan so your vehicle can no longer tow it safely. Remodeling the inside with new cabinets, bathroom fixtures, and other materials can also add significant weight. Consider the weight of your caravan when fully loaded when choosing one so you know your vehicle can tow it safely and easily.

Replacement parts can be hard to find

You might like the idea of an older, classic caravan or one that you can readily afford because of its age; however, as with a used car, parts can often be hard to find as the caravan gets older and more rare. You'll eventually need replacement parts to ensure the suspension is in good repair, as well as parts for indoor plumbing, electricity, flooring, and other such features that are difficult to repair with parts from another brand or year of caravan. When choosing a caravan, be sure you've noted the cost of replacement parts and other such features so you've considered long-term costs and not just the purchase price.

Keep these tips in mind as you check out caravan sales in your area, and you'll be more likely to find the perfect fit for your needs.
